Director, Project Management
$110,000 to $130,000 + bonus
(Traits) – Bio Tech
San Diego, California

Position Specifications

Position:                                 Director, Traits Management/Project Management

Location:                                San Diego, California

Company:

Company Background:
CIBUS LLC (“ CIBUS “) is a privately held trait development company that is commercializing proprietary genetic traits of substantial value in the global agricultural, edible oil, biofuels and industrial process sectors. Over the last seven years CIBUS has refined a patented technology platform that enables the targeted mutation of specific genes in cells.  Called the Rapid Trait Development System or “RTDS™”; the technology does not create transgenic (“GMO”) products, leaves no exogenous genetic material behind in the cell, and has been certified by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a ‘directed mutagenesis’ methodology – meaning that it is not subject to the costs, time delays and risks associated with ‘Genetically Modified Organisms’ or “GMO’s”. CIBUS’s technology and proprietary traits are protected by 19 issued domestic and foreign patents and 8 pending applications with numerous foreign counterparts.  In addition, the company has developed a very large body of know how and other trade secrets critical to the effective practice of RTDS.

The Value of Traits:
In agriculture, the benefits of so-called “improved traits”, including higher yields, lower costs, reduced crop losses, or higher value crops, can be sold on a per acre basis.  Typically, this value is shared between the farmer and the trait provider.  The portion paid by the farmer to the trait provider (known as the ‘trait premium’) is over and above the normal price for the seed itself.
Farmers seek out traits with clearly defined commercial value to remain competitive and maximize their profitability. For their own competitive reasons, seed companies vie to offer these genetic traits in their best performing seed lines.  In most of the markets the company intends to enter, the farmer purchases new seed each year from their seed supplier.  This is because the seed is either hybrid seed and maintains its genetic performance and characteristics for only one season, or farmers have found through experience that the highest seed quality with new seed is important to their achieving optimal results.  This also means that the trait premium that the company will charge for its value added traits can also be collected with payment for the seed.  In concert, this dynamic has produced a well-established system for commercialization of traits that is now moving from the developed world into many parts of the developing world. Because there is no ongoing cost associated with maintaining a trait in the seed beyond its initial development, this trait premium revenue stream translates almost directly into gross profit.

Reporting Relationship:       The Director, Traits Management reports directly to the Senior Vice President, Research.  The Director, Traits is responsible for managing all aspects of the process of trait development and commercialization beginning with the creation of the trait and coordinating with Product and Commercial Development through to the delivery of the trait to the customer.  This position maintains a close working relationship with all members of the Leadership Team.
